• Fractals (formerly Mandelbrot) is an AfterDark™ module that generates fractal images from the well-known Mandelbrot set. It takes full advantage of math coprocessors and color monitors up to 24-bit, but it will also run on 68000-based, black & white Macs. The "Regions" dialog lets you explore the set and zoom in as much as you like to define your own favourite fractal scenes; a compact on-line help gives you the basic information needed to create your own pictures. Use the Fractals Mover application to save your regions in separate files for redistribution.
• Versions 1.31 and later will save a PICT file when the the Caps Lock key is toggled (either on or off) and include the Fractal Viewer application, which can display several PICT files at once and uses only 96K of RAM. All PICT files are stored in a folder named "Fractal Images" at the root level of the startup disk. Note that color images take up a lot of disk space, so make sure you've got enough before you save your images.
• Version 1.32 has a new "Fast mode" option that allows faster Macs to take full advantage of their speed by drawing more than one dot at each call (this works best when the "System IQ activity monitor" is OFF). The CPU hangs in fractal calculations for a user-defined time (1/60 to 4 sec), so background tasks may be severely affected by the "Fast mode" option - turn it off if you want your Mac to print documents or do anything else while AfterDark is running.
• Version 1.33 can automatically save a PICT file when the image is completed. The Fractals Mover application, suggested by Kathy Rages, has been included in the bundle along with some interesting regions she sent me.
